It’s all systems go on May 16 for the only grassroots indoor football tournament in the country, the Ambassadors Cup. Twelve teams of young futsal players will go head-to-head as they represent the Embassies of Chile, Argentina, Timor Leste, Spain, United Kingdom, Nigeria, Germany, Canada, Mexico, United States, South Africa, and ANZ Pilipinas in the futsal courts of the University of Asia and the Pacific, Pasig City.
The futsal players, aged 11 to 13, hail from San Idelfonso Parish, GK Tatalon, GK Pinagsama, GK Barangka, GK Sampaloc II, Western Bicutan Football Club, GK Concepcion, Immaculate Conception Cathedral Soup Kitchen, Birhen ng Lujan Parish, Fundacion Santiago, and Dream Big Pilipinas.
Last year’s champions, San Ildefonso and GK Tatalon, prepare for more action this year as they defend their titles, while other teams, including new entrant Germany, promise to put up a big fight.
The Ambassadors Cup, organized by the University of Asia and the Pacific in collaboration with Team Socceroo Football Club and The Henry V. Moran Foundation, aims to foster in children values formation and belief through their participation in the beautiful game of football.
Sponsored by ABS-CBN Sports+Action, The Philippine Star, Manila Bulletin and Bootcamp, this year’s games will be held simultaneously at the Olympic-sized futsal pitch of UA&P’s Parking and Sports Building and at the university’s Multipurpose Court.
Football action begins at 7:30 a.m. Championship games are at 3:00 p.m. with the awarding ceremony to be led by UA&P President Dr. Jose Maria Mariano and UA&P co-founder and football enthusiast Dr. Bernardo Villegas.
