The icon shows a galleon on the sea, guided by a five-pointed star. The Latin inscription surrounding the seal reads "University of Asia and the Pacific". The Latin inscription on the banner below the seal, UNITAS, is the university motto: unity. The colors are those prevalent in the Asian region: red and gold. The Galleon. In the past, the galleon served as link between the two sides of the Pacific. It connected Asia to the Americas and from there to the rest of the then known world. It is an appropriate symbol of what the UA&P aims to be: a bridge of understanding between Asia and the rest of the world. The Sea. The sea represents the Pacific Ocean, the body of water at whose rim the countries that make up the Asia-Pacific region, including the Philippines. The Star. The seal features a guiding star to indicate that we cannot count on human strength alone. Those familiar with Christian symbols will also see in the star a representation of the Stella Orientis (Star of the Orient), which is very appropriate for the Asia-Pacific region. The chapel of CRC, the seedbed of the University, is dedicated to Mary, under the above advocation. UNITAS. The Latin word that means unity—unity between faith and reason, religion and life. It reflects the commitment of everyone in the University towards the pursuit of wisdom, which necessarily entails the synthesis and, therefore, a unity of life. |
